Is there something I can give my 1 year old to boost her immune system, and prevent her from getting sick?

She is starting childcare on Monday, and I know how easy it is going to be for colds to be spread from child to child. I see commercials for products such as airborn, and emergen C, but I don't know if there is anything geared towards children.

Is there something I can give my 1 year old to boost her immune system, and prevent her from getting sick?

Reply:No, and those things don't really work anyway.

Kids actually need to get these colds. That is what boosts their immune systems. Now, take the usual precautions. If a child is coming to your home and they have a fever, then the parents can't bring them. If your child has a fever, then no other kids can come over. Wash your hands well to help the spread of germs.

Don't let the kids drink out of each others sippy cups/bottles. Don't put a child getting over a cold in the same playpen as a well child.
Reply:There is Airborn just for children and filled with vitamins just like the adults Airborn.Great stuff!
Reply:a multi chewable vitamin is about all you can do as far as 'giving her something', but there are other things you can do.

change her clothes when she gets home. make sure her hands are cleansed.

as with a few who have already posted, the best thing to battle a virus is exposure.
Reply:Vitamin A.
Reply:No. Handwashing, hand sanitizer, keeping hands off face are about the best ways. I don't know what you can do about that other than make sure the childcare provider is disinfecting the toys and things the children share mutually and having the children use hand sanitizer. Watch out for the people making promises they can't back up. I think if you look, the main ingredients of these supplements are vitamin C, zinc, and B-complex. They do support a healthy immune system, but not any more than a healthy diet and multivitamin with minerals would. Many vitamins can damage your child's liver if over done, so do not believe any of these people who want to dose your child up on massive amounts of anything. They are playing on your fear to make money.
Reply:I know this might sound bad, but you need to let your child get sick, the more they are exposed to different germs, the less they will be sick. The more you disinfect, sanitize, clean, and protect her from the outside world, the more she will get sick becasue she is NEVER exposed to anything. But do try to wash her hands and such.
