Do the chances of gettig into medical school drop significantly if you have a C in alot of freshman courses.?

I am a freshamn of a Biochemistry major with a pre=med track. I know freshamn courses are typically the easiest. I got a C in biology and a few other courses C's as well. I know there is plenty time to boost my GPA and do other activities, but would medical schools hold a C against me. Hey..it happens I guess???

you just have to work harder at it.


and the schools might not hold it against you if you show some promise.

Reply:If you got C's in your freshmen bio classes and they are the easiest, either you aren't applying yourself, or you need to rethink your career direction. They will be taking a lot of other things in account as well. But don't let "it happens" be an excuse, cuz actually it doesn't "just happen". Getting into a a top med school is highly competetive. Don't stress too much over your C's, but make sure you break this cycle dramatically so anyone who looks at your transcript in the future will know it was just a *rookie* mistake.
Reply:Your basic freshman classes are in English composition, speech, basic mathematics, and perhaps a foreign language, reading and other sorts of basic skills.





These are ESSENTIAL SKILLS that you will need in your more advanced classes, such as chemistry, biology, pharmacology, and such. You need to be able to read rapidly with a high degree of comprehension and to explain phenomena succinctly to your colleagues to be a doctor.





Many universities will allow you to retake courses for a higher grade. Unfortunately, you will have to pay again. On the other hand, this time you will not be goofing off.





The best way to get a correct answer to this question is to call the admissions office of one or more medical schools of your choice and ask them what to do.





A C in biology basically will mean to most admissions officers that either (a) you are a goof-off or (b) you do not have adequate skills to make it through medical school.





There are fields where a 90% success rate is just not good enough. If one out of ten of the plane your are flying crashes, if one of ten of your patients dies, you won't get an A-, you will be fired (or dead).





No one needs a doctor who cannot hack Freshman biology.


Take it over. Study this time.


Your social life is dead until you get that MD. That's the price you pay.
Reply:If you're getting C's in the easy classes, it's only going to get alot harder. You should reconsider your chosen career.
Reply:It happens, but it doesnt happen to people who get in to med school. I'd say that unless you have a DRAMATIC upturn in your average, then your chances of getting into med school are toast.





If you thought your freshman courses were hard, wait until you get to organic chemistry. OMG are you going to get a surprise. Especially when you consider that med school is like taking organic for four years, only harder.

By themselves, a couple of C's aren't going to kill you. You should still be able to pull your GPA up into the range needed to get into medical school. However, it just means that you have NO wiggle room. If you have a bad semester, i.e. you get sick, have a bad breakup, have a crappy professor, etc, you will be truely screwed because you have used up what leeway you have.





I know from personal experience that a couple of bad grades as a freshman will haunt you for the rest of your undergraduate career.
Reply:If your grades are already NOW drooping...slacking...than it will get worse later on when the course really get HARD!





You must apply yourself more and aim for 3.5 GPA or better (but not lower than 3.2)...and if you are serious about med school, repeat some of those IMPORTANT classes (bio/chem/phys/math/english) and get an A so that they will drop the C out of your GPA. This may take longer, but this will be your foundation for the later classes!





A bad foundation will make you "crumble" later on!!!
Reply:yep. it will bring down ur GPA regardless of other grades u get in ur other classes. u can opt to take the classes over and replace the grades tho
